How to Make Easy 3-Ingredient Ube Halaya

Sometimes, simple is best! This 3-ingredient Ube Halaya is creamy, fragrant, and bursting with the natural flavor of purple yam—no condensed milk or extra additives needed. Perfect for quick cravings or a no-fuss dessert.

Ingredients

454 g grated ube (purple yam) – fresh or frozen

1 can (400 ml) coconut milk

3/4 cup granulated sugar (I use organic cane sugar)

1 tbsp butter (optional, for smoother texture)

Instructions

1. Prepare the ube

If using fresh ube, peel, boil, and mash until smooth. If using frozen grated ube, thaw completely.

2. Melt the butter

In a non-stick pan over medium heat, melt the butter. (optional)

3. Combine ingredients

Add the grated ube, coconut milk, and sugar. Stir until well-blended. Add a few drops of ube extract if desired (optional).

4. Cook until thick

Continue stirring over low to medium heat to prevent sticking. Cook for about 30–40 minutes or until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pan.

5. Cool and set

Transfer to a greased container or mold. Let it cool before serving. You can top it with latik (coconut curds) or grated cheese for extra flavor.

Tips

  • Constant stirring keeps the mixture from burning and creates a smooth texture.

  • Serve warm or chilled—it tastes great both ways.

  • Top with grated cheese or coconut curds (latik) for extra flavor.

Serving Ideas

  • Serve warm or chilled on its own.

  • Use as a filling for hopia, ensaymada, or cake rolls.

  • Try using as a filling for my most favorite Filipino snack Ube Banana Langka Turon

  • Add to halo-halo or ice cream for a delicious twist.
